Funk, Fredericka, Mrs.

Grandma Funk

The death angel again visited Madison on April 29, 1920 and took from our midst that grand old lady Grandma Funk.

Mrs. Fredericka Funk was a native of Germany, being born at Borden, Germany, Oct. 13, 1836. She was married in 1860 to Mickall Funk and to this union, 10 children were born, four dying in infancy. Her husband died on March 21, 1886.

On March 13,1889 she came to America with her family and located east of Madison on a farm, where she lived until March 1896, when she moved to Madison and made her home with her daughter, Mrs. J. H. Katterman, where she was still living at the time of her death. The children who survive her are: Mrs. J. H. Katterman, Mrs. John Bauer, John, Fred, Henry and Jake Funk. She has one brother living in Portland, Oregon.

Fred Bley and wife and daughter were over from Newman Grove Monday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Bley.s aunt, Mrs. Funk.

Fritz Alstadt came down from Norfolk to attend Mrs. Funks funeral Monday.

Frost, William T.

West Point Progress: WILLIAM T. FROST, formerly one of Cuming County’s old settlers, died last week at Battle Creek, Madison County. Mr. Frost resided on Cuming creek in 1869 and 1870, afterwards removing to this place where he lived about three years finally removing to Madison county. He was a brother-in-law of John McKirahan, and our old residents who know him say he was excellent citizen. Source: Norfolk Daily News, March 16, 1891, page 3

Frost, Jemima

JEMIMA FROST

Grandma Jemima Frost, over 79 years old, died on January 5 at the home of her daughter in Meadow Grove. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon and interment was made at the Jackson cemetery. Two children survive, Mrs. Aaron Higbee of Meadow Grove and Mrs. Eugene Crook of North Platte, Neb.  Source: Battle Creek Enterprise,  January 12,1922 page 1

Fish, Andrew J.

A. J. Fish

Andrew J. Fish, son of John and Pheba Ann Fish, was born in Ohio, Oct. 2, 1845. He emigrated to Charles City, Iowa, there he was united in marriage to Alice E. Keck. To this union were born five daughters and two sons: Leona Justice of Norfolk, May McKay, Nellie Bush, and Ray Fish of Creswell, Ore., DessieSmith of Oregon City, Leta Williams of Everett, Wash., and George Fish of Herrick, S. Dak. He is also survived by two sisters: Sarah Phillips, Meadow Grove and Lucina Yerrick of Waterloo, Iowa.

The deceased came to Madison Co. 36 years ago. Fourteen years ago he went to Oregon where he resided until last Nov. when he returned and made his home with his daughter Mrs. Justice of Norfolk. His wife died Jan. 27, 1905. Both were laid to rest in the McCoy cemetery. Funeral services were held in the L. D. S. church Friday of last week, Rev. Wm. Finkral, James Francis

James Francis Finkral was born in Bohemia on December 7, 1835. He came to America in 1866 and lived in Tama, Iowa for 5 years. Then he went to Taylor county, Iowa where he remained for 12 years. In 1883 he came to Madison county, Nebraska. In 1866 he was united in marriage to Mary Vete and to this union were born three children, Joseph, James, and Mrs. Anna Sobotka. Mrs. Finkral passed away 12 years ago.

Mr. Finkral was a kind father and a good neighbor. He had a host of friends throughout this part of Nebraska. Until within a few months ago he enjoyed excellent health and bore a keen memory. His death came quietly and peacefully at the home of his son James on June 24 at the age of 89 years, 6 months and 17 days. The funeral services were held Friday at St. Francis De Sales Catholic church. The interment was made in a nearby cemetery. Besides his two sons and one daughter, he is survived by 22 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Source: excerpts from Madison Star.Mail, July 2, 1925, page 1.

Farley, infant son of George M. Farley

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Farley

The 7-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. George M. Farley died this morning. The little fellow had never been strong since his birth and was able to survive his twin brother but a brief period. Evans, Williams

Williams Evans, of the banking firm of Matheson and Evens, Oakdale, was drowned on Saturday last in the Cedar Creek at that place. It seems that he was fording the creek on horseback for the purpose of looking after some cattle, and that his horse slipped or stumbled while in the stream, and threw Mr. Evans into the water where he was drowned immediately. His body was taken to Wisconsin on Monday.   Source: Norfolk Journal, Friday June 8, 1883, page 3.

Evans, Charles, Mrs. (Isabella Warner)

Isabella Warner was born April 27, 1841 at Rockford, Illinois. She was married to Chas. Evans on Dec. 7, 1860 at Rockford, Illinois. To this union six children were born, two of whom have passed away, namely, Mrs. Chas. Hutchins and Etta B. Evans The surviving children are: Mrs. Frank Muffly of Orchard, Charley E. Evans of Omaha, Mrs. Alta M. Ahlman and Mrs. A. A. Deuel of Norfolk.  Excerpts from Meadow Grove News, Friday December 30, 1921 on page 1.

Dunivan, Leona, Mrs.

Mother Dies in Virginia

Word has been received of the death of Mrs. Leona Dunivan, mother of Mrs. J. C. Bagwell and of Chas. Dunivan.  She passed away March 24 at her home at Fox Creek, Va., at the age of 59 years.  Word came here too late for the relatives to attend the funeral services. Funeral of Frank Dufphey

Interment at Mt. Zion Cemetery

The funeral of Frank Dufphey, brief mention of whose death was made last week, was held at the J. A. Wright home in Battle Creek at 10:30 last Saturday afternoon, Rev. M. Doherty of the First Baptist church conducting the services. Interment was made at the Mt. Zion cemetery southwest of Battle Creek.

In the passing of Frank Dufphey, Madison County loses another pioneer. Born in Virginia, he came to Madison county in 1879 and worked with his brother, Joe, until 1883, when he was married to Miss Ellen Casey and bought the farm which has since been his home. Though experiencing all the hardships and privations with which the early settlers had to contend, he had faith in Nebraska and after years of hard work found himself free of debt and in position to enjoy his declining days. Honest to a fault, he was held in highest regard by all acquaintances and his death is a loss keenly felt by the community.

Mr. Dufphey was 61 years and 6 months old. Aside from the wife and one daughter, Mrs. Stover Mink of Emerick, deceased is survived by four brothers and three sisters, Joe and Mrs. J. A. Wright of Battle Creek, Lawrence and Tom of Tilden, Mrs. Joe Osborn of Schoolcraft, Dick of Idaho and a sister in Virginia.
